Never say goodbye...

"O Captain, My Captain!"
- Dead Poet's Society -

We lost a wonderful soul this morning. A childhood hero. An inspiration. A lifelong legend. Robin Williams was the epitome of talent and never failed to make us feel. He could take an item and turn it into a hundred characters without even having to take a minute to think about it. One of the best improvisation actors of all time. An air of sadness has grasped us all today and we will never forget what a great man Robin Williams really was.

"Never say goodbye, because saying goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting"
- Peter Pan -

Robin Williams was an outstanding actor in everything he did and embodied the characters with such heart. Some of his films include Aladdin, Jumanji, Mrs Doubtfire, Dead Poet's Society, Flubber, Good Will Hunting, Hook, Patch Adams and Jack; to name a few, but his filmography is to be envied by all.

"You're only given one little spark of madness, you mustn't lose it"
- Robin Williams -

Do you understand depression? Does anyone? Every single soul and mind on this planet is different and no matter how many similarities we may have, no one will ever know what's going on in your mind and sometimes you may not be able to figure out your own.

"You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to"
- Good Will Hunting -

If a friend came to you and told you they had depression, what would you do? I fear that many would ask why or offer to cheer them up. People with depression don't always know the cause; do you know why certain people get cancer and not others? No. Depression is an illness, a disease, not a state of mind. What you need to do is let that person know that you are there for them and are ready to listen, even if you don't completely understand; if you or they think it is at a serious stage, you must get them help. Don't pretend to understand, if you don't; depression is not just feeling sad because you spent all of your money or because you weren't invited to a party, depression is a feeling of being lost in your own mind, sometimes feeling worthless, helpless and just stuck. Too many people say 'I'm depressed', when really, they're just fed up. This kind of language dilutes just how serious depression is, because according to our day-to-day language, everyone is depressed.

Depression is common though, with about 5 in every 100 adults experiencing it each year, on varying levels. Not everyone suffering with depression knows they are, but if you feel you might be, don't hide it. Try to speak with someone who you trust and can confide in. If you don't feel like you have anyone you can speak to, please call a support line and let them help you.

If you know someone who has depression, or you suspect may be showing signs of depression, you can help. It takes patience and understanding and you need to be there for them, ask them how you can help and do not be judgemental or accusatory if they do things like sleep a lot or get agitated. If this is someone close to you, it can be difficult not to take things personally and it can ruin relationships if neither of you are able to handle the situation together. If you are struggling to communicate with someone, please call one of the support lines, they can help you both. It's not just a case of pulling someone out of a bad mood, so please do your research on depression and know how to support yourself or others.

We are losing too many people to this awful illness and when people say things like 'coward' and 'selfish', it shows the lack of understanding around it. It's difficult to see a situation from other perspectives if the person suffering is sure the world would be better off without them. Even someone like Robin Williams, who was able to bring such joy to the world, lost his battle to depression. A mask can hide many things and the most dangerous aspect of this illness is being afraid to speak about it. Think about what you say to people, you never know what's happening behind their mask.

"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world"
- Dead Poet's Society -

Words cannot describe how devastating a loss Robin Williams is! He was an absolutely amazing talent, fascinating man and a wonderfully silly comedian. My childhood would have been very different without him. Rest in peace you lovely, lovely man! Thoughts and prayers are with your friends and family.
