How to: Treat your body like a temple

Has anyone ever told you to treat your body like a temple? What does that even mean and how would you go about doing it? I've put together how I think you should treat your body like a temple and I hope it helps you to do the same for yourself.

"Treat your body like a temple, not a woodshed. The mind and the body work together. Your body needs to be a good support system for the mind and the spirit. If you take good care of it, your body can take you wherever you want to go, with the power and the strength and energy and vitality you will need to get there."
-Jim Rohn-

Probably one of the most important things you can do for your body is keep it hydrated. This does not mean drinking carbonated drinks and alcohol, but water and herbal teas. This will provide your body with the fuel it needs to stay alive. Your body will tell you when it is lacking in hydration and in many ways, you may not realise what it's trying to tell you. Start to listen to your body, if you have a headache, feel lethargic or just feel weak and drained; it's time to rehydrate yourself. You should be drinking water throughout every single day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

Think about what you're putting into your body. Refined sugars and refined carbs will give your body nothing of value and will just make you feel sluggish later. You need to understand that everything you do, will affect the way you feel later and that is just your body responding to your own actions. Start to really think about everything you eat and ask yourself what benefit it is going to give to your body. Obviously, we are human and we have cravings, but cravings can be beaten and you can have sweet treats with nutritional value for your body.

You also want to try and exercise your body for 30 minutes a day. Everyone has different capabilities, but only because some people have trained their body more than others. There have been people in the world who have been told they'll never walk again and their passion and determination to live life has meant they have proven everyone wrong. Yet, there are people who have a fully functioning body and choose not to use it. Should a function of your body be taken away from you today, how would you feel? Defeated? Or ready to take on the world? Why should it come to removing a function before you feel ready?

Your body is a very complicated system and it needs to rest. Each person has a different amount of sleep required to feel refreshed; based on lifestyle, diet, stress levels; but, you should try to aim for a full 7-10 hours a night, on average. Start to concentrate on your breathing, how many times a day do you sit for 1 minute and do deep breathing? It's relaxing, it's stress relieving and if you end it with a smile, it's worth doing.

This is definitely one I need to work on. Today's world is so busy, everyone has something going on and although I always try to make time for my friends and family; I never make time for myself. My to do lists are ridiculously long and the best way to slow down, would be to have 2-3 tasks to complete as a priority each day and everything else can just wait. Reduce repetitive tasks, such as checking your emails, to once in the morning and once in the evening. Who needs to check their emails hourly? Think how much more you could get done if you weren't checking your emails every hour, then just popping across to this site and then that one; before you know it, it's time to check your emails again.

No one needs anger in their life. Get rid of all of the hatred, anger, bitchiness, judgement and all the other negative thoughts and feelings you have. The best way to do this is to forgive. Forgive those who have wronged you - made up rumours about you, being two faced, lied, called you names and all the other horrible things people do. Forgive them; forgive yourself for doing the same to others and you can start to move on and find peace. If you have been a person that has wronged many people and not been on the nice side of the fence, try watching My Name is Earl and find some inspiration for how to find peace.

Stop doubting yourself and respect your own judgements, appreciate who you are and what you're capable of. If you don't believe in yourself, then why should others bother? It's time to realise that you really can be anyone you want to be, you just have to trust in yourself and allow yourself to take risks and sometimes even make a fool of yourself. We all learn from mistakes and life is about learning and developing from our lessons (That's part of my 'meaning of life' theory anyway).

We don't all have to be rich and have unlimited holiday days available at work to be able to visit the planet. Sure, there are wonders of the world that we all dream of one day visiting, but what about those wonders on your doorstep? Can you honestly say that you have visited your local village, town and city completely? There's always somewhere new to visit. Don't think you can't learn about the world and its different cultures from your home country, because you can.

What have you learnt today? Try asking yourself this at the end of every day (this is a great time to get some deep breathing in). What made you happy today? Was there anything you could have done differently? Something you said? Is it too late to go back and correct a situation? Find the positives from bad news you may have received today. I live by 'everything happens for a reason' and even if you don't believe that, try finding a reason why something bad might have happened to you today. Was it Karma? Was it an opportunity that could have prevented you from pursuing an even better opportunity? If you look, you'll almost always find a reason.

Obviously Vegan and Vegetarian diets are kinder to our planet, but respecting the planet doesn't mean cutting out meat. Try and eat humanely raised, grass-fed, free-range meat and eggs. Source organic vegetables and where you can, take part in environmental projects. It's a start. I have 2 vegetarian days a week and I like to think I'm doing my part without taking away something that is a happiness in my life.

Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine; do you need them in your life to be happy? Try to at least cut down on these things by setting yourself weekly allowances and not exceeding them. I admire people that have the dedication to stick to strict diets or cut out a bad habit cold turkey, but I like the 'all in moderation' technique.

Keep your brain active with daily challenges and puzzles. If you regularly challenge yourself to keep thinking capacity to the best it can be, you're more likely to keep Alzheimer's and Dementia at bay. Obviously, this isn't a hard and fast way to prevent these diseases, but it is said that daily challenges can help. Even playing a word or numbers game for 20 minutes a day can push you to think when solving problems.

Full satisfaction for yourself will come from following your dreams, not just sitting and thinking about them. No dream is too large; if you want to be the next Brad or Angelina, you can be. If you want to be the next Barrack Obama, you can be. They are just people too, but they made it happen! Discover your dream, break it down, follow each step until you get there and overcome every barrier you reach. No one said it was easy, but passion is the best energy.

Help others to love and respect themselves and treat their bodies like temples too. There are so many people in the world without basic living needs that we take for granted; clean water, a roof over our heads, warmth and education; to name a few. Enrol on projects that help people all over the world and help them to get on the right track in life. If every single person helped one other person in the world to get their life going in the direction they deserve it to be going, then the world would be a much happier place and I think that's what a lot of us lack - happiness!

How do you treat yourselves? Could you do with some self-reflection? I'm still working on all of these points, but as you get older, you most definitely begin to realise what your body is capable of and that it is important to treasure it. Not everyone has a fully functioning body in life and many of us just don't appreciate what we have and that we have no restrictions!
