How to: Take care of your eyes

Wow, what a ridiculously hot day it has been! It's been lovely, don't get me wrong, but I'm much more of a winter baby - I love my ice, snow and water too much and have an irrational phobia of wasps. Anyway, the sun today has got me thinking about how to protect ourselves in the heat. There are a lot of articles about keeping yourself hydrated and hot to take care of your skin, but I've noticed a huge lack of information when it comes to taking care of our eyes. Summer brings bright light, heat, dry air, humidity, beer gardens and less sleep; so I would say our eyes are one of the biggest things at risk during the warmer months of the year. I've pulled together some quick and easy tips to help you look after your eyes.

Like quite a lot of things in life, fruits and vegetables seem to be able to help us solve a lot of our problems. To protect your eyes, you need to ensure you are getting your daily requirement of Vitamins A and C. Try increasing the amount of kale, spinach and broccoli you eat for Vitamin A and carrots, sweetcorn, sweet peppers, blueberries and oranges for Vitamin C. Although not fruits or vegetables, while we're on the topic of healthy eating, try to increase your intake of eggs and oily fish for omega 3 fatty acids.

Wear sunglasses and wide brim sunhats when you go out in the sun and try to avoid looking directly into bright lights (especially not directly at the sun).

Like fruits and vegetables, water does seem to be a recurring solution to a lot of life's problems and it's not a coincidence that it keeps cropping up. If you're not drinking enough, what are you waiting for? Drinking water will help to avoid irritation with your eyes and keep them hydrated.

Although you may not feel tired, your eyes need to rest. Step away from the technology and take at least a 5 minute break away from the screen every hour. You're never too busy to look after yourself and if you're working to a deadline, the 5 minute break will help you refresh your mind and be even more productive when you return. Avoid reading and using any technology in a dark room as it will strain your eyes and can give you headaches. Finally, try popping a cucumber slice on each eye for 10 minutes a day to reduce puffiness and brighten your eyes.

If you've noticed dark circles under eyes, prop yourself up with an extra pillow and sleep on your back. Sorted!

Believe it or not, alcohol can affect your eyes more than you know. The liver produces an antioxidant that protects your eyes against diseases and we all know that alcohol can significantly damage your liver. Smokers are twice as likely to lose their sight than non-smokers.

I am not a medical expert so if you do have any issues with your eyes, please go and see your GP. We really are very lucky to have eyesight, so we shouldn't take it for granted. Enjoy the sun, but be sure to take extra care with your eyes!
