A-Z of Animated Films

After I wrote my A-Z of Feel Good Films, a friend asked me where the Pixar films were because we're both huge Monsters Inc. fans! I figured that I love animated films so much, that they deserve their own A-Z list; so here it is.

There were five letters Q, V, X, Y, Z that I couldn't think of a film for and plenty that I couldn't decide on just one; so I gave myself five extras to add onto any letter where there was just no way I could choose!

ANASTASIA - Many a time have I seen people question the whereabouts of Anastasia on lists of Disney Princesses, but Anastasia is a FOX production, not Disney. Now we have that cleared up, I love this film; the songs are beautiful and the voice cast is actually amazing!

BEAUTY & THE BEAST - I've loved this film since I was a little girl. My mum always tells me the story of how I used to watch it several times a day, but *spoiler alert* when the beast died I'd turn it off and cry my heart out; not listening to my mum when she told me to keep watching. I'd then watch it all over again and continuously put myself through that heartache; why?

CORPSE BRIDE - Beautiful music, beautiful characters, beautiful story, beautiful voices; I adore Helena Bonham Carter!

DUMBO - This is full of adorable-ness! 'Baby Mine' just makes my heart hurt and never fails to make me cry. There are so many controversial issues hiding in the background of Dumbo and many different factors that influenced the making of the film; the Disney Animation Team did not expect this to be as successful as it was and still is.

EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE - I only got around to watching this film within the last 12 months, but I've already seen it about 5 times. I love that it's not a love story with a princess, just a spoilt brat of an emperor discovering what respect, manners and friendship are. I'm also a Patrick Warburton and David Spade fan; I love them in Rules of Engagement.

FROZEN/FINDING NEMO - Ok, so I had to use one of my extra letters here; I just can't choose. I love both films so damn much! I actually love these two so much that when I'm busy doing my uni work, I've been known to let the DVD roll over and restart after I've just finished watching it - not twice, but three times! I don't know if that's something I should be proud of or ashamed of, but I love them, so I don't care.

GNOMEO & JULIET - A lovely version of the classic love story Romeo & Juliet; cute, funny and well animated.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON - I want a dragon! Scratch that, I want Toothless! He is one of the, if not the, most adorable animated animal ever created. I can't wait to see the sequel.

ICE AGE/THE INCREDIBLES - My second extra letter goes here. I love all of the Ice Age films, but I don't think you can beat the first one; Sid cracks me up. I can't even guess at how many times I have seen either of these films; I think I'm addicted to animation. I put off watching The Incredibles for so long and I don't know why, so don't ask; but wow! Why I held off, I don't know, but I love love love it - and remember...no capes!

THE JUNGLE BOOK - Another wonderfully charming classic. This film has great characters, a great voice cast and great music, what's not to love?

KUNG FU PANDA - I'm a big Jack Black fan and I think he is perfect to voice this role. I love the whole 'I don't fit in, so I'm going to make it my mission to train or study and show everyone what I'm made of' kind of storyline, and this is just that with an oriental twist. Lovely music and scenery.

THE LITTLE MERMAID/THE LION KING - There is just no way I can choose here, these are two of my all-time favourite Disney films and so I'm going to have to use my third extra letter. Both films are about standing up for who you truly are and finding your place in the world and both have absolutely enchanting music. I don't think there's a lyric I don't know in either film and no matter how hard I try, I don't think there's ever been a time I've not cried when you know who dies.

MONSTERS INC. - I really wanted to use my fourth letter in here and add Madagascar, but I have two extras further down the list so I stuck with Monsters Inc. I love how different this film is, it's so creative and unique. I've always believed I am a creative person, but to be able to create an entire world on the other side of our cupboard doors just seems to hurt my brain how much amazing-ness that team must have. Don't even get me started on Monsters University, I think it is one of the few films in the world where the sequel rivals the original.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - What's this? What's this? It's an amazing animated Christmas film is what it is and I only watched this for the first time about two Christmases ago. Winter, snow, Tim Burton, could you ask for anything more from a Christmas film? Elf, but that's not animated!

ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIONS - So many puppies! I really like the live action and the animated version of this film. The Twilight Bark amuses me in the animated version, and the way they match all of the dogs to their owners is hilarious!

THE PRINCESS & THE FROG - Another story of someone trying to make their way in the world, but with a twist. I love the fact she starts from the bottom with a dream and works her way up with a lot of effort and passion to make it happen, even with certain challenges that may hop up on you. See what I did there? Frogs hop? No, never mind. I can really relate to this film since I'm such a dreamer and just work hard to make them a reality.

Q - One free letter for me!

ROBOTS - A lovely story of poor robots trying to make it in a rich robot world and survive. Great characters and voice cast.

SPIRITED AWAY/SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARVES - I can't choose, so I'm claiming free letter number four. Spirited Away is a Studio Ghibli film and is quite strange if you're new to the world of Animé (Japanese animation), but the music is magical and I could listen to it all day, every day. The story has lots of underlying morals and is told in the most beautiful way. Snow White is of course Disney and is the first full feature animated film produced by the Walt Disney Animation Studios. I've always loved Snow White and envied her ability to sing and talk to the animals.

TANGLED/TOY STORY - This is me claiming my final extra letter because these two are life changers. Toy Story pushed the bar ridiculously high for animated films and even now, it is still one of the most highly regarded films made in the animation world. Every child hopes that their toys come to life when they're not looking and this film makes that wish come true. Tangled follows a similar story to The Princess and the Frog, in that a girl is doing all she can to follow her dream. Instead of hard work, though, she is escorted by her future prince; beautiful songs though and very funny sidekicks.

UP - Up tells more of a story in the first 3 minutes than about 50% of films ever made. You can't watch the opening to Up and not cry, you just can't. It's so beautiful and with an old man being the lead character, it is another unique production from Pixar. It has comedy, sadness, colourful characters, charm and love.

V - Two free letter for me!

WRECK IT RALPH - A great film for gaming nostalgia! If you ever played games as a kid, you will love this film, even if you don't love it. There are so many references to retro games and their characters, it makes watching the film fun to pick them all out. I am a huge John C Reilly fan and he is the perfect choice for Ralph in this film; misunderstood and lovable. I love the story and the design is exquisite.

X - Three free letter for me!
Y - Four free letter for me!
Z - Five free letter for me! If you can think of any animated films for any of my five missing letters, please share because I honestly can't think of any at all.

That was hard, there were so many more I could have mentioned. I'll maybe have to break them down by animation studio next time!

I have seen all of the above countless times and I could watch them all over and over again. I can't wait to go back to uni in September, because that means Winter will start kicking in and I will have lots of work to do - the best excuse to get in bed with my books and a good animated film.
