3 Day Detox Diet

With summer quickly approaching, panic is setting in to get that perfect beach body and lose the bloat. Everyone can try a detox and everyone should try to complete a detox at least once a year to cleanse your body of toxins and boost your immune system and kidney functions.

There are many different types of detox diets on the internet and you can obviously adapt these to suit you and your family, but I have put together a basic guide here.

I suggest if you are going to complete a detox diet, you do it when you are off work and do not have any major commitments as you may experience headaches or lack of energy due to the removal of refined carbohydrates, sugars and sweeteners that we have become so accustomed to in our modern day diets.

Try and stick to the diet as closely as possible, but if it seems a little daunting, a little cup of coffee or square of dark chocolate alongside your new detox diet is going to be better than not doing it at all.

You need to try and stick to fruits and vegetables high in fibre and eat them raw when snacking. If you need to, you can cook your vegetables lightly, but try and avoid oils and salt.

You need to drink plenty of water and I suggest you drink Chamomile or Dandelion tea which will help to detox your liver functioning. I show you what different kinds of tea can do for your body here 'Get the kettle on!'.

  • You should drink at least 8 glasses of liquid a day, water or herbal tea.
  • Try adding lemon to your water and drinking it warm as this will help cleanse your digestive system.
  • Go for a 20 minute walk each day to relax and get some fresh air.
  • Do 30 minutes of yoga a day, stretching the body will help to release toxins from your muscles.
  • If you get hungry, brush your teeth; avoid chewing gum and mints though as these have sugars and sweeteners too.
  • Chew your food. Really savouring your food and spending at least 20 minutes eating a meal will avoid overeating and allow you to feel the effects of being full.
  • Get at least 8 hours sleep a night and try to fit in an afternoon nap too.
  • Don't detox forever - detoxing for a long period of time can begin to affect your muscle mass due to the lack of calories you're eating. Don't plan on using a detox as a long term diet plan as this would not be healthy.

Day 1

Begin your day with a glass of warm water with lemon.

Breakfast: Fruit salad with natural yoghurt.

Mid-morning snack: An apple and a small handful of almonds.

Lunch: Organic grilled or steamed chicken with mixed salad. Try to avoid reaching for the dressing, but if you really must, only use a little.

Mid afternoon snack: Raw pepper, cucumber and celery sticks. You can have this with a small amount of hummus if you like, but don't go crazy.

Dinner: A three egg-white omelette with tomatoes, onions and mushrooms and a side salad.

Day 2

Begin your day with a glass of warm water with lemon.

Breakfast: Small bowl of porridge with your choice of berries and a handful of ground linseeds.

Mid-morning snack: A handful of baby carrots.

Lunch: Baked potato with tuna or low salt baked beans, with salad. Avoid the cheese and try having the tuna as is, without mayonnaise or salad cream.

Mid afternoon snack: Natural yoghurt and a banana.

Dinner: Grilled turkey with spinach, grapes and red onion in a whole-wheat pitta and a sprinkling of lemon juice.

Day 3

Begin your day with a glass of warm water with lemon.

Breakfast: Wholegrain bread toasted if you like, with natural peanut butter and sliced banana.

Mid-morning snack: Small bowl of berries (raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries).

Lunch: 2 boiled eggs and an apple.

Mid afternoon snack: A pear and a small handful of almonds.

Dinner: Grilled or steamed salmon with steamed green vegetables and sesame seeds. Try broccoli and spinach.

Vegetarians/Vegans: For a different version of this diet, you can swap out any meat products for tofu, Quorn, extra vegetables, salad or falafel. Try scrambled tofu as an alternative to boiled eggs and omelette.

A little extra: Some people choose to do a five day detox instead of three. Feel free to mix and match the menu choices for an extra two days, just be sure to eat three meals a day and drink plenty of water and herbal tea.

Try to maintain your intake of water as you should be drinking about 8 glasses a day anyway; the detox could be a great way to help kick-start this new habit. You could also try to keep your meal portions at a smaller amount and your intake of fruits and vegetables higher as these should form about a third of your diet every day.
